It Wants to Stop Motorcycle Fatalities Altogether

There are a lot of innovative ideas when it comes to motorcycle safety right now, but Damon Motorcycles wants to take things up a notch. The company secured $2.5 million in funding, according to RideApart, to build an electric motorcycle that uses cameras, sensors, and alert systems to monitor what’s going on around the motorcycle 360 degrees and at every moment. The system will use lights and haptic feedback to alert riders of dangerous conditions.

The company also wants to collect all of the data it’s motorcycles take in. That way the system can learn from its experiences and make adjustments over time. This information would be shared with all other Damon Motorcycles products, and continue to improve safety in the long term.

The systems installed on the bike are impressive in and of themselves. What’s even better is the artificial intelligence system the company is producing. Reports indicate that Damon hopes to raise another $3 million in funding soon. Interestingly, Erik Buell, whose most recent venture is the electric motorcycle company Fuell, sits on the board of advisors at Damon. It will be interesting to see how the company develops in the future.

This is a good idea. It will all be in how it’s executed if the technology capabilities are there—I think so—and how quickly they can be implemented. The company wants to end motorcycle fatalities by 2030. That’s pretty ambitious, but I like their gusto.
